The Lord of the Rings Return to Moria
What is The Lord of the Rings Return to Moria?
The Lord of the Rings Return to Moria is a cooperative survival crafting game by Free Range Games, published by North Beach Games. It is set in the Fourth Age of Middle-earth, after the events of the War of the Ring: on behalf of Lord Gimli, a company of dwarves sets out to reclaim the abandoned halls of Khazad-dûm and to restart mining in Moria.
The game revolves around mining, crafting and rebuilding the dwarven halls. You dig for ores, forge tools and armor, set up camps and smithies and work your way deeper into the mountain layer by layer. Along the way you have to watch out for hunger, cold and exhaustion – and above all for noise: digging too loudly attracts the orcs that have taken over the depths of the mountain.
The game world is procedurally generated, so tunnels, caverns and resource deposits look different in every playthrough. Between the generated areas lie well-known locations from Tolkien's works that give exploration a fixed structure. Besides the campaign there is a sandbox mode that focuses more strongly on free building and exploration.
Return to Moria can be played solo or in co-op with up to eight players at the same time. On your own server your world persists even when nobody is online, and you can play together across platforms. The game is available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store as well as on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
