NIS2 – Domain Owner Verification

Since the EU directive NIS2 came into force, the contact details of domain owners have to be verified. You will receive a one-time email with a confirmation link that you need to click. If you do not confirm in time, your domain will be temporarily deactivated — but it will not be deleted and is reactivated automatically once you confirm.

What is NIS2 and why does it affect my domain?

NIS2 is a European Union directive intended to strengthen cybersecurity in Europe. One part of it concerns domains: registries and domain providers (registrars) are required to keep accurate and verified data about domain owners.

For you as a customer this means: the email address stored as the owner contact for your domain must be demonstrably reachable. That is exactly what the owner verification checks.

We handle domains through our registrar InterNetX. The verification email is therefore sent via their system, and the confirmation link points to the domain domain-robot.org.

Note

The verification is a legal requirement and cannot be opted out of or skipped. It is free of charge for you.

Who is affected?

The verification affects all domains — regardless of:

• the extension (e.g. .de, .com, .net, .eu)
• the term of your domain
• the registration date (both new and existing domains)

You only have to confirm the stored email address once — not with every renewal.

Several domains?

The confirmation applies to all of your domains that have this email address stored as the owner contact. So you only need to do it once and do not have to repeat it for each domain.

Still keep an eye on the deadlines: they can differ from domain to domain. Confirm as early as possible so that none of your domains runs into its deadline.

Tip

Check in advance whether the email address stored for your domain is still up to date and reachable for you. The verification email is only sent to this address.

How to complete the verification

1. Open your mailbox
   Open the mailbox of the email address stored as the owner contact for your domain (e.g. [email protected]).

2. Find the email
   Look for the verification email from [email protected]. The subject line can vary and may appear in English or German — for example:

   deine-domain.de - Owner Verification
   deine-domain.de - Inhaber-Verifizierung
   Action required – Domain owner verification
   Handlungsbedarf – Verifizierung des Domaininhabers

   It is therefore best to search by sender rather than by subject. Also check your spam or junk folder — such messages often end up there.

3. Verify authenticity
   Make sure the email is genuine. You will find the characteristics in the section How do I know the email is genuine?.

4. Open the link
   Click the confirmation link in the email. It takes you to a page on domain-robot.org.

5. Complete the confirmation
   Confirm your contact details there. You will then receive a confirmation that the verification was successful.

Caution

Complete the confirmation within the deadline stated as a date in the email (e.g. TT.MM.JJJJ). After that, your domain is deactivated automatically.

The deadline can differ from domain to domain. So do not rely on a fixed period — check the email instead. If you have several domains, it is best to confirm right after receiving the first email, which covers all of your domains.

How do I know the email is genuine?

Because such emails are often mistaken for phishing, here are the key characteristics of a genuine verification email:

• The sender is [email protected].
• The link points to domain-robot.org. This is the system of our registrar InterNetX. Hover over the link (without clicking) to see the target in your email program.
• Your specific domain is named (e.g. deine-domain.de) — depending on the subject line variant, only inside the email itself.
• Payment details are never requested — no credit card, bank details or PayPal access.
• You are never asked for a password — neither your EmeraldHost password nor any other credentials.
• There is no file attachment for you to open.

Beware of phishing

If a supposed verification email asks you for payment details, passwords or an immediate payment, it is not our email. In that case, do not click any links and contact our support.

When in doubt, do not click anything and contact our support. We will check for you whether a verification is actually pending for your domain.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

If the verification is not completed in time, the domain is deactivated. This means:

• Your website and the associated email addresses are no longer reachable.
• However, the domain remains registered and is not deleted. You will not lose it, and it will not be given to anyone else.

Here is how to get your domain back online:

1. Complete the verification
   Confirm your contact details using the link in the verification email. If you can no longer find the email, request a new link from our support.

2. Wait for automatic reactivation
   After a successful confirmation, the domain is reactivated automatically. You do not need to do anything else.

Domain still not reachable?

After reactivation it can take up to 24 hours until your domain is reachable everywhere again. This is due to DNS caching at internet providers worldwide. In most cases it is much faster.

• your stored data is incomplete or no longer up to date,
• you have not received a verification email,
• the confirmation link has expired or does not work,
• you need a new verification link,
• you are unsure whether an email is genuine,
• your domain has been deactivated and you need help reactivating it.

• the affected domain (e.g. deine-domain.de)
• the stored email address (e.g. [email protected])
