Avorion

What is Avorion?

Avorion is a space sandbox game by developer Boxelware in which you build your own spaceship out of individual blocks. You start with a tiny ship at the edge of a procedurally generated galaxy and work your way towards the centre step by step – to where the most valuable materials and the greatest dangers await.

Ship building is at the core of the game. Every block has a function: hull, thrusters, weapons, cargo bay, shields or power generation. From these you create ships in any shape imaginable – from a small mining vessel to a huge carrier platform with its own fleet. Seven materials with different properties determine what you can build; the eponymous Avorion is only found close to the galactic centre.

Around the ship building, Avorion offers an open economy and faction world: you mine resources, trade goods, take on missions, build your own stations and get drawn into conflicts with the factions of the galaxy. Over time you no longer command just a single ship, but an entire fleet along with its production chains.

Avorion can be played solo or together in multiplayer. On your own server your galaxy persists permanently – you can form alliances, build stations and explore the galaxy together, even when not everyone is online at the same time. Servers can additionally be extended with mods from the Steam Workshop. The game entered Early Access in 2017, reached version 1.0 in 2020 and is available on PC via Steam.
